Solar Cycle Stuff

According to NASA, the so called „Solar Cycle 23“ has ended. Till now, I have no clue what NASA is really talking about but I got curious. Maybe, I’ll check that out later on, who knows? For now, let’s just take a look at the graph, OK?

  1. The sun goes through an 11 year cycle of sunspot activity. If you go to places like http://www.spaceweather.com/ you can see a SOHO image of the current days sun. As your chart shows, (and as the sun image at the spaceweather site show) we aren’t seeing any sunspots on the sun right now. That should gradually change in the next couple of years. We should start to see more and more sunspots as we head toward Maximum in 2012 – 2013.

  2. Solar Cycles are related to the sun-spot activity on the sun. This in turn is related to solar output which effects the amount of particles the sun sends our way toward earth. This solar wind in turn is what interacts with the upper atmospher which ionizes particles with the result of for one, making what is known as the Northern Lights in the northern hemisphere. The isonization is also what helps to make short wave radio work in makeing the atmospher able to bend radio waves back toward earth, bouncing there way around the world.
    Solar flares which also may increase produces Coronal mass ejection which can reek havic with satilite systems, which is not good. Makes living in the Space Station more dangerous as well.
    Oh, the cycles tend to run in a general 11 year cycle of high to low activies periods. As such, things should start to get more interesting in the upcoming years.
